The Wollemi Pine

Van Loon's Nursery is proud to be selected as a retailer for the rare and ancient Wollemi Pine. Plants are available now in two sizes; 150mm pot and a 200mm pot.

The Wollemi Pine is the ultimate survivor, it has outlived the dinosaurs and survived seventeen ice ages. Previously known only in fossil records, the Wollemi Pine was thought to be extinct until David Noble discovered a small stand of the trees in an isolated ravine in the Wollemi National Park in 1994.The greatest mystery of the tree, however, is that it survived hidden for so long, so close to Sydney, only a couple of hours drive away. Soon after discovery a decision was made to keep the location of the trees a closely guarded secret to protect them from collectors, vandals and disease.

Less than one hundred trees exist in the wild today.
Wollemi pine seeds and cuttings were collected from the grove so a population outside the canyon could be established as an insurance policy against disaster. Every pine sold returns a royalty to conserve the Wollemi and other threatened Australian plant species. This ensures that anyone who buys a Wollemi Pine will be playing a part in the global conservation effort.

Wollemi pines are highly versatile and easy to grow. It will tolerate heat, cold, full sun and shade as well as different soil types. Grow it as a long term potted plant, as an indoor plant, or let it grow to it's full potential in large gardens or parks.
